Gringo Bandito Hot Sauce

Gringo Bandito was started over twelve years ago by Dexter Holland, singer for the multi-platinum punk rock band The Offspring, more as a hobby than a business.

“I just thought it would be cool to have a hot sauce,” says Holland. “I gave away the first batch as Christmas presents to my friends.” The response to this new hot sauce was so overwhelming that Holland decided to put it out commercially.”It started small but it has just kept on growing.” After several years and almost a million bottles later, Gringo Bandito hot sauce has garnered a worldwide audience and a loyal following. “We’re not the most well-known hot sauce out there,” says Holland, “but once people try it, they’re hooked.”

With so many hot sauces on the market today, what sets Gringo Bandito apart is that it is one of the healthiest sauces around. Gringo Bandito has 70% less salt than other major competitors and contains no preservatives, is paleo friendly, gluten free and all natural.

Gringo Bandito is available in three flavors: red, green and mouth-burning hot sauce. To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect from the lead singer of a band. Each sauce has a nice flavor and you can taste the difference between the three flavors. These hot sauces are the perfect condiment to spice up a boring dish or take a meal to the next level.

You can find Gring Bandito in over 500 restaurants, 7000 supermarkets and online on Amazon.com

Keli’s Sauces // Gluten Free Asian and Hawaiian inspired Sauces

Keli’s Sauces is a line of gluten free Asian and Hawaiian inspired sauces. They are a female owned and operated company and since starting in 1992, they’ve been making the best Polynesian style sauces in the U.S.and all of them are naturally gluten free, vegan, nut-free, low fat, no MSG, and 50% lower in sodium than most teriyaki on the market!

IMG_2920

Gluten free teriyaki is not easy to find and when you do find it, it is loaded with sodium. Keli’s Sauces include:

  • Polynesian Sweet-N-Sour
  • Hawaiian Ginger Garlic Teriyaki Glaze
  • Spicy Hawaiian Ginger Garlic Teriyaki Glaze
  • Pineapple Hawaiian Luau Teriyaki Marinade
  • Pele’s Fire Hot Teriyaki

I was thrilled when Teresa – Keli’s daughter – reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in trying their sauces. Jeremy and I went on our honeymoon last month to the French Polynesia and I was excited for the opportunity to taste some of those flavors again.

The sauces are great for marinading and glazing, grilling, stir frying and can even be used as dipping sauces.

IMG_2925

The Polynesian Sweet-N-Sour is my favorite! It’s not too heavy and it has a great flavors it reminds me of being in the islands! I’ve used it on shrimp and tofu and I can’t wait to try it with more dishes.

IMG_2930

Currently, you can purhase Keili’s sauces online and in select retail locations in Hawaii, Washington and Oregon.

Bear Pond Farms Pesto

Earlier this week I posed about Bear Pond Farms new heat-and-serve Queso. In that post I also mentioned that Bear Pone Farms first product line was it’s Pestos, and today I’m here to talk about all about pesto.

IMG_1786

Bear Pond Farms is located in Glastonbury, CT and has been making gluten free pesto sauces and dips for 13 years. The pesto sauces capture that sparkling-green awesomeness—in uniquely flavorful and mindful ways. Made with organic herbs, non-GMO oil, and sheep’s milk pecorino romano cheese, all of the pestos are gluten free. They also make two vegan pesto varieties if dairy isn’t your thing.

I don’t usually buy pre-made sauces, I tend to make my own, but when Pear Pond Farms asked if I would like to try their pestos, I decided to try them. Why you ask? First, I liked that the ingredients are non-GMO and that all products are gluten free. Secondly, the ingredient list is short – herbs, oil, garlic and cheese – nothing unrecognizable or unpronounceable.

Bear Pond Farms Pesto is available in 7 varieties:

  • 3 Greens Pesto (vegan)
  • Cilantro Pesto
  • Tomato Basil Pesto
  • Sun dried tomato pesto
  • Spice vegan pesto
  • Premium basil pesto
  • Artichoke pesto

My favorite so far is the 3 Greens Pesto. It is a lighter and modern vegan pesto made with organic kale and arugula. It is earthy and tangy and perfect with many dishes. I used this pesto to make chicken and broccoli pasta and it was delicious! It was super easy to make. Sear chicken in olive oil and 2 tablespoons pesto over medium-high heat until almost cooked. Add in broccoli and 2 more tablespoons of pesto. Cook until chicken is done. Add it pasta and desired amount of pesto. Toss and serve.

IMG_1789

Bear Pond Farms has a variety of recipes and tips available on their website

IMG_1791

The pestos and quesos are lab tested <20 ppm gluten. Though they are made at a MA packer that is not a gluten free facility, it is SQF2 certified with preventatives in place to prevent ingredient cross-contamination.

You can purchase Bear Pond Farm products via Amazon and at Whole Foods, select Big Y Supermarkets, and dozens of other retailers throughout the country. Click here for a full list of retail locations.

Mrs. Renfro’s NEW Pumpkin Salsa

Pumpkin Salsa is the newest creation from the award-winning brand, Renfro Foods. Launched this past June at the Summer Fancy Food Show in New York, the company’s 19th salsa evokes a spice mix of pumpkin pie, with a heat level registering at the medium level.

IMG_5831

One of my favorite things about the fall is pumpkin! I love baking and cooking with it – banana pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin hummus, pumpkin chili, pumpkin soup, pumpkin pancakes, and pumpkin pie, just to name a few. But I’ve never had a pumpkin salsa before! I was intrigued.

It’s Thanksgiving on a chip! This delightful combination of pumpkin pie spices and real pumpkin with all the classic salsa ingredients is perfect for dipping, as a marinade and makes a tasty base for slow cooking chicken. I’ve been enjoying it straight up on tortilla chips but if you want to cook with it, there’s a recipe for Hearty Pumpkin Salsa Soup right on the label!

All of Mrs. Renfro’s salsas are gluten free, fat free and low in calorie. They are ideal for anyone who is looking for something that is healthy and tasty.

Cucina Antica Foods Gluten Free Pasta Sauce

What’s spaghetti without sauce? If you are buying one, you are usually buying the other, right? But which – and how – to choose is the real question.

Finding a healthy pasta sauce is not always easy. With so many brands and flavors its hard to know how to choose. When I buy pasta sauce I look for sauces that are made with clean ingredients, low in sugar and lower in sodium that most brands, have no added sugar, preservatives and are not too sweet.

IMG_4412

Cucina Antica cooking and pasta sauces are made with real tomatoes, not paste or puree.  The sauces contain no preservatives, no added sugar, no added water, and they are low in sodium for a healthy, wholesome meal. The sauces are low in sodium, with 220-240mg per serving, with the exception of the Pumpkin Sauce that has 350mg, which is still well below many that clock in at 500mg.  Each sauce is low in sugar (1-2g per serving). Basically, Cucina Antica checks off everyone of my requirements in a pasta sauce.

We used the Caramelized Garlic to cook chicken last night. We spread a good amount over chicken breast, covered it with foil, and baked in the oven at 350F for about about 30 minutes. The chicken turned out amazingly delicious! it was juicy and full of flavor. Uncle Steve’s Organic Pasta Sauce Review & Giveaway

JarMasterGroupShot-425x425

Supermarket shelves are lined with jarred pasta sauces. When it comes to pasta sauce, you get what you pay for, and quality differs tremendously between the lower priced and the more expensive sauces. Store brands and many main stream brands on the market cost about $3-$4 per jar. But when you reach for the jars that cost $7-$10+ there is a huge difference in taste and ingredients. Unfortunately, sometimes eating healthier means spending more money, but when it comes to pasta sauce it is something I am 100% ok with spending more money.

The more expensive sauces are made with cleaner ingredients and taste that much better. I can never go back to  Ragu, Preggo or Hunts. And once you taste Uncle Steve’s Pasta Sauce you won’t be able to either.

Best known for his role of Bobby Baccalieri on The Sopranos, Steve Schirripa was born in Bensonhurst to a Jewish mother and Italian father, and the actor/producer is known among friends to be an excellent cook. His line of pasta sauces came about after Steve cooked for friends in TriBeCa at a dinner party where all the guys had gotten together. One of the guests loved his sauce so much that he encouraged Steve to bottle it, and he did, and that is how Uncle Steve’s Pasta Sauce was born.

With three flavors available, Tomato Basil, Marinara and Arrabiata, each tomato sauce is hand crafted with organic Italian whole peeled tomatoes, organic fresh onions, organic extra virgin olive oil, organic fresh garlic, sea salt, and fresh organic spices, and bottled right here in New York.

Certified USDA Organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, kosher, no sugar added and vegan, Steve offers truly authentic tasting and fresh sauces, that meet my criteria for a good pasta sauce.

The Marinara is my favorite. The simplicity of this sauce makes it a versatile base for many Italian dishes. And Jeremy loved the Arrabiata sauce, a spicy marinara. “Arrabiata” loosely translates to “angry mood,” a name inspired by its spicy taste and goes well with any plain pasta, chicken or steak.

Screen Shot 2015-11-12 at 6.29.16 PM

Pasta sauce is naturally sweet (tomatoes contain the sugar fructose), and Uncle Steve’s does not add sugar, which is not really needed but added by so many lower-end brands. Next time you buy a jar of sauce, look at the ingredients and make sure there is no added sugar. Better yet, just try a jar of Uncle Steve’s Pasta Sauce instead!

Uncle Steve’s Italian Specialties sauces are available for sale in jar sets of 3. Each jar is priced at $7.99, which we think is well worth it in my books. I’d much rather pay a little more for quality sauce. And like I said before, some sauces with equal caliber can cost $10 or more! This is a good price.

Now for the giveaway!! One lucky reader will win a Survivor Gift Basket that includes 1 jar of Uncle Steve’s organic Marinara Sauce, an Uncle Steve’s “Survivor” t-shirt, and a bamboo spoon. To Enter, simply click on the rafflecopter below.

Saffron Road Gluten Free World Cuisine

SafronRoadFood-Logo-new

I’ve shared on my blog about Saffron Road products before and I’m honored to be working with them again for a second post. Saffron Road makes truly great products and if you haven’t tried them yet, you need to check them out! Saffron Road offers

Care Package from Saffron Road
Care Package from Saffron Road

CEO and founder Adnan Durrani witnessed in person the horrible tradegy of 9/11.  Through this event, he was deeply affected and wanted a way to ” soothe political, religious, cultural and social dissonance.” He took part in the Silk Road Project in 2002, which eventually led him to create the company Saffron Road. The brand launched in 2010 with frozen Indian entrees and has since expanded. Since then, Saffron Road has expanded its product line to include Middle Eastern, Thai, Korean, and Mexican cuisine and has moved beyond frozen food to broths, dried snacks, and simmer sauces.

IMG_2781
Selection of Gluten Free Saffron Road products

Most of Saffron Road’s products – over 70% – are free of gluten as certified by the Gluten Free Certification Organization (GFCO). All of the certified gluten free products are naturally free of gluten, so there is never a sacrifice in flavor! Unlike some food manufacturers that may self-label themselves as gluten free, Saffron Road’s products are audited, inspected, and verified in order to provide that extra comfort and transparency to our consumers.

Saffron Road offers 23 gluten free frozen entrees, three types of chicken nuggets/tenders, five varieties of crunchy chickpeas, seven simmer sauces, and two food-truck inspired taco meals. So that equals 40 gluten free offerings in total! They also have a line of vegetarian/vegan options for those who do not eat meat.

Lemongrass Basil Chicken
Lemongrass Basil Chicken

The meals are easy to cook, with an option to cook in the oven for 40 minutes or heat in the microwave for 5 minutes. Since I usually eat these meals when I work late, I’m hungry by the time I get home so I opted for the microwave. The aromas that filled the air from my microwave, made me feel like I was about to eat a very delicious ethnic meal straight from the kitchen of an Indian restaurant. The Lemongrass Basil Chicken is my favorite Saffron Road entree. The sauce is made with green curry, peppers, onions and basil. It was light and rich in flavors. The rice was a perfect texture, but I wish there was more!

All of the products have a heat indicator on the package. I try to stick to the mild and medium options, anything more is too hot for me. The Lamb Sagg (picture below) is mild but I still find it a little spicy!

IMG_2787
Lamb Saag with spinach and white rice

I love that each entrée is one portion and a sizable healthy portion at that. Ranging from 210-370 calories each, they are pretty healthy, although some meals have a little too much sodium for my liking, so I stay away from those.

One thing I just learned about Saffron Road is that they are the 1st non-GRO verified frozen entree. And, something I did know and would like to share, is that all Saffron Road meat products are 100% humanely raised, vegetarian fed, all natural, antibiotic free, and halal certified.

Simmer Sauces

You can find Saffron Road products nationwide in more than 100 retailers, including A&P, Food Emporium, Whole Foods, Publix, D’agostina Supermarkets, and over 6,000 stores. At my local Whole Foods, the entrees and tacos are very reasonably priced at $3.79-$3.99 each. To find a retail location nearest you, check out their store locator
