Kuli Kuli Moringa – A superfood for 2018

Sterling-Rice Group’s Culinary Trends 2018 report is the culmination of a year-long examination of the global foodscape, based on international scouting trips, in-depth primary research, and input from the Culinary Council, a team of more than 175 chefs, restauranteurs, and food experts from around the world. While some culinary trends may rise and fall within the same calendar year, many of the most relevant trends follow longer arcs, manifesting in connected, yet new, innovations along the way. One of the projected hot new superfoods of 2018 is moringa.

Kuli Kuli Foods is America’s leading moringa brand, and has worked to build a supply chain with women-owned cooperatives and small farmers across Africa and South America. Kali Kuli’s powder, bars and energy shots are gluten free and sold in over 6,000 stores.

Although this plant was initially discovered for its beneficial properties thousands of years ago, only recently has moringa (sometimes called the Ben oil tree) become known as one of the most impressive herbal supplements to hit the holistic health market. In fact, in 2008 the National Institute of Health called moringa (moringa oleifera) the “plant of the year,” acknowledging that “perhaps like no other single species, this plant has the potential to help reverse multiple major environmental problems and provide for many unmet human needs.”

Kuli Kuli’s moringa is rich in iron, calcium, vitamins, and antioxidants, and provides a complete protein with all 9 essential amino acids. Gram for gram, moringa contains two times the amount of protein of yogurt, four times the amount of vitamin A as carrots, four times the amount of calcium as cow’s milk, seven times amount of vitamin C as oranges. I think you get the picture.

Morninga has many benefits including: anti-inflammatory, balances hormones and slows the effects of aging, helps improve digestive health and balances blood sugar levels, to name a few.

All of Kuli Kuli’s products are gluten free, vegan, soy free, dairy free and non-GMO. My favorite are the Moringa Superfood Bars which are available in three flavors: Dark Chocolate, Crunchy Almond and Black Cherry. The bars are chewy and slightly sweet and with 190 calories and more fiber than a bowl of oatmeal, they keep me going all morning.

Kuli Kuli is available at Whole Foods Market and Natural food stores throughout the country. You can also purchase Kuli Kuli products on Amazon

Make Your Own Gluten-Free Hard Cider with this Handy Kit from Brooklyn Brew Shop

Built on the principles that making beer—real beer, from real ingredients—can be simple, tasty and more importantly, fun, Brooklyn Brew Shop sells stylish brew kits and ingredient mixes for seasonally-inspired beers and ciders. All of their kits are designed for use on a standard kitchen stove and use real ingredients instead of the less flavorful extracts and additives typical in other homebrewing kits.

Brooklyn Brew Shop’s Hard Cider Kit is stylish, affordable and super easy to use and offers a simple way to turn leftover apples or pears from fall farm excursions into delicious, home-brewed, craft quality hard cider. It contains everything you need to turn apples or cider from your local market into something a little more festive. It’s good for three batches of hard cider and since cider is naturally gluten-free, it’s an ideal gift for gluten-averse merrymakers and curious epicureans alike!

While apple picking season might be over, cider is a drink that can be served all holiday season long!

The Kit includes 1 gallon reusable glass fermenter, 3 packets yeast, vinyl tubing & clamp, racking cane & tip, chambered airlock, 3 packets cleanser, and screw-cap stopper. All you need is apple cider/juice! You can even bypass the apple juicing yourself for pre-pressed cider from your favorite farmers’ market. Simply add a few packets of yeast to your fresh squeezed apples (or pre-pressed cider) and let science work its magic. After two weeks add three tablespoons of honey to your fermented juice to give the cider the extra dose of sugar it needs to carbonate. A couple weeks later and you’ll be sipping delightfully fizzy Hard Cider by the fire.

This is the perfect holiday gift for the cider lover in your life. Or, by it for yourself and serve it at your holiday party to impress all your friends and family!

FORAGER PROJECT’S NEW FLAVORS OF ORGANIC PRESSED VEGETABLE CHIPS

Forager Project has introduced three new flavors of organic Pressed Vegetable Chips using upcycled plant fiber from their cold-pressed juices. Joining Forager’s growing line of organic, plant-based, dairy-free foods made with simple ingredients, Pressed Vegetable Chips are now available in Chipotle BBQ, Cheezy Greens, and Wasabi Greens. Committed to creating products that are better for people and the planet, Forager reduces food waste by upcycling otherwise composted vegetable fiber sourced from pressing their own vegetable juice.

organic-vegetable-chips

Forager Project began in 2013 with a focus on high-quality, cold-pressed vegetable juices that were high in nutrients and low in sugar. After tasting the organic vegetable fiber left in the press, Founder and CEO Stephen Williamson believed the beautiful vegetable pulp would not only make a great base for a chip but would also leverage Forager’s raw ingredients, helping to reduce food waste and create a more sustainable proposition for the company and its consumers.

“Waste is a matter of perspective,” said Forager Founder & CEO Stephen Williamson. “We had all of this lovely, organic vegetable pulp that we were composting, and thought, there has got to be a better way. We’re as interested in creating healthy, plant-based foods as we are in mitigating our impact on the planet.”

The three new flavors include:

  • Chipotle BBQ: With subtle smoky heat, this is an elevated BBQ chip with a kick

  • Cheezy Greens: Seasoned with nutritional yeast for a cheesy but dairy-free experience. Perfect for my cheese cravings! This one is my favorite. I love the cheesy flavor, which is something I don’t get to eat often.

  • Wasabi Greens: a bold, balanced punch of flavor. Too spicy for me.

Similar in texture to a traditional tortilla chip but gluten-free and corn-free, Forager’s Organic Vegetable Chips combine fresh-pressed vegetable fiber from their cold-pressed juices with ancient grains, seeds, organic seasoning, and a touch of sea salt for a distinct flavor and satisfying crunch. Committed to creating products that are better for people and the planet, Forager reduces food waste by upcycling otherwise composted vegetable fiber sourced from pressing their own vegetable juice.

The chips are perfect for snacking by themselves or paired with your favorite guacamole or salsa.

Ready to eat and share, each 5oz bag of Forager’s organic Pressed Vegetable Chips retails for $3.99 and can be purchased in stores nationwide. Chipotle BBQ is available in a 1.5oz bag for $1.99 at select retailers. More information, including a list of ingredients, can be found on Forager Project’s website.

NEW NuNaturals Sugar Free Syrups

In 2015 I was introduced to NuNaturals, a company offering a wide selection of all natural, plant-based sweeteners, baking ingredients, and dietary supplements. The company’s first product was “The Mental Energy Formula,” a nutritional supplement that NuNaturals still sells today. When Warren learned about a sweet herb native to South American called Stevia that was an alternative to sugar, he knew that it could greatly help people in the United States struggling with the problems that come from sugar.

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 8.05.52 PM

For those of you who are afraid, or skeptical to use stevia, please trust me and read on. NuNaturals is not like other stevia brands that leave a bitter aftertaste in your mouth, nor does it give your foods and beverages a funny taste.

Since 2015, NuNaturals has introduced several NEW items of additional Sugar Free Syrups including  GINGER, VANILLA, & VANILLA GINGER. Not only are these syrups sugar free, they are also calorie free.

NuStevia Vanilla Syrup has the perfect amount of sweetness with a VERY vanilla taste. Use it in everything you would use vanilla in. Homemade sugar-free vanilla ice cream; cookies, cakes, vanilla smoothies, and shakes; vanilla pudding, pies, on sweet potatoes fries; tea and coffee, including the chocolate cupcakes pictured below!

Screen Shot 2017-10-19 at 7.53.53 PM

Next up I am going to try the NuStevia Ginger Syrup; a spicy ginger syrup with the perfect amount of sweetness. Made with  real organic ginger extract, it is sure to please the ginger lover in you. Add a little bit to lemonade for a spicy, yet sweet, Ginger Lemonade. Add to stir-frys for a little sweetness with a ginger kick! NuStevia Ginger Syrup shines in coffee, especially if you’re a fan of “Dirty Chais.” Speaking of chai, add it to your mellow chai tea to kick the ginger up a notch. Or add it to your regular herbal tea to help with digestion after meals. Use it in marinades and sauces. It’s great on plain yogurt, who would have thought?! Or how about in cocktails? You can make a delicious sugar-free Moscow Mule or Dark and Stormy.

You can purchase NuNaturals products at Whole Foods, GNC and other real locations. Click here to find a location nearest you.

Gluten Free Mulay’s Sausage Product Review

Many sausages have “fillers” in them that are grain based, and therefore contain gluten. Fillers help cut the cost of using 100% meat in a sausage. The grain also helps to absorb the fat in these traditionally fatty links. Well today, I want to introduce you to a sausage that is 100% gluten free.

Mulay’s Sausage is a natural tradition made according to Nana’s centuries old recipes from Sicily. With a family crest that dates back to 1326 AD when ancestor Nicolo’ was the Senator of Palermo! Though the Mulay family has moved around a bit but nothing has been able to change the way Mulays’ make Sausage! It has always been All Natural and Gluten Free. It has never had nitrates, msg, soy, sugar, dairy, artificial colors or flavors; and it is still made that way today.

Mul_all

Mulay’s Sausage is 100% Natural Pork and comes in a variety of flavors:

  • Hot Italian Sausage
  • Mild Italian Suasage
  • Killer Hot Italian Sausage
  • Chorizo Sausage
  • Bratwurst
  • Breakfast Sausage

All sausages are available in links or ground. We love to grill the links and we’ve used the ground sausage to make breakfast sandwiches, Bolognese sauce and meatballs! I love that there are very few ingredients; 5 to be exact! The ingredients are pork, red pepper, black pepper, salt and spices. Simple yes flavorful!

You can find Mulay’s Sausage at Stop & Shop and dozen’s of other locations across the country. Click here to find a retail location nearest you.

Planet Fuel Launching Line of Organic Juices

Planet Fuel Beverage Company is launching a line of organic juices. The Connecticut-based Planet Fuel is a mission-driven business, dedicated to building a line of great-tasting, organic products and inspiring their consumers to contribute to environmental conservation.

image003

Planet Fuel’s line of organic juices is available in three flavors: Organic Apple Grape Juice, Organic Cherry Lemonade and Organic Mango Pear Lime Juice. My favorite is the Cherry Lemonade; it’s a nice twist on the classic lemonade drink.
Unlike competitors in the space, Planet Fuel beverages combine organic juices and a splash of water to naturally lower sugar content without sacrificing the taste. There are no added refined sugars, preservatives or artificial sweeteners in their shelf stable beverages. Each organic juice is sourced from domestic farms that are certified organic and naturally GMO-free. Planet Fuel promotes an organic lifestyle through the consumption of foods free from pesticides and other harmful toxins.

IMG_3472

What I like most about Planet Fuel is that this tastes like juice; not sugar and no fake ingredients.

Planet Fuel Beverage Co. is a proud member of the GoCleanLabel initiative that advocates for simple, clean and easily understood food and beverage labeling. Planet Fuel’s organic juices are the first teen/tween beverage to carry the GoCleanLabel distinction. Planet Fuel Beverage Co. is a business with a social mission to promote environmental education and participate in efforts to protect the planet. In July 2016, the company established the Planet Fuel Charitable Fund (PFCF), the giving arm of Planet Fuel Beverage Co., which is backed by private donors and 5% of sales from Planet Fuel’s organic beverages. This past year the PFCF has given $100,000 in grants to Save the Sound to help restore natlive fish runs in the Long Island Sound, and to The Ocean Conservancy to support their initiatives to reduce ocean plastics through a “Skip the Straw” campaign.

Each beverage is available for purchase in a single can, four, twelve or 24-pack. A single sells for $1.89, $5.99 for a 4-pack, $15.99 for a 12-pack and $32.99 for a 24-pack.

Go Umami Baked Tofu Bars

House Foods Go Umami baked tofu bars are made with non-GMO tofu to offer the first-ever tofu snack in the U.S market. Go Umami are perfect for on-the-go protein (5 g of Protein, 10% of DV) with easy-to-peel packaging.

Screen Shot 2017-09-18 at 9.42.01 PM

I am always on the lookout for protein bars, especially with my busy work schedule and travel, but most bars are loaded with sugar or unpronounceable ingredients. Go Umami offers an alternative; one that is savory, not sweet, and made with ingredients I can pronounce!

Go Umami is available in 3 flavors: savory, orange teriyaki and hickory smoke that are non-GMO, Kosher and preservative free. The bars do require refrigeration, one of the reasons you won’t find preservatives, but can be a drawback for some. Personally, it doesn’t bother me except that I cannot bring them on long trips without a cooler!

You can purchase Go Umami at Big Y and Wegmans. Click here to find a retail location nearest you.
