Gluten Free Options at Ñaño Ecuadorian Kitchen // Hell’s Kitchen NYC

Ñaño means brother to Ecuadorians and was the perfect name for the restaurant that opened in Hell’s Kitchen in 2013. The dishes served here are passed down family recipes, using traditional Ecuadorian cooking techniques and ingredients.

Over server was friendly very knowledgeable about the menu, but it does help that only 4 dishes contain gluten.

 The Ceviche was delicious and a must try if you find yourself at Ñaño Ecuadorian Kitchen. 

The portion sizes were quite large, my dad and I shared the Carne en Palito and there was plenty of food. The meat dishes are on the saltier side, as you would expect from South American meat, but nonetheless delicious, tender and cooked to perfection.

Enjoy delicious, fresh home made meals in a friendly and cozy environment. So stop by soon to have a little taste of Ecuador. I would recommend you make a reservation as the restaurant is quite small with only 6 tables (and two outside when the patio is open).

I was very impressed with the waiters knowledge of which menu items were/were not gluten free. They keep a sheet with all gluten free options in the kitchen, which he did check once just to confirm. He was right.

Since we were at a Balkan restaurant, we opted for a bottle of Muscat from Macedonia. It was on the dryer side, with a musky, and “earthy” aftertaste according to Jeremy, with fresh-grape, peach and acidic flavors.

We started off with 6 mezzes. One mezze costs $7, and the choice of 6 is $18. So, of course we got 6. All 6 spreads were absolutely delicious. The babaganush was very basily. Different from any babaganush I’ve ever had. There was very little eggplant and no smokey flavor, but delicious nonetheless. The olive tampenade was also unique in that it was not purred, but rather ground into very fine pieces. I am definitely trying this at home!

You can request cucumbers and carrots instead of pita, to enjoy the spreads.

I ordered the Chicken Shishkebab. The chicken was tender and juicy, not something I am used to when I order shish kebabs (it’s usually dry). It was by far the best middle eastern chicken I’ve ever had, and I would order it again. The basmati rice was also delicious. How they get rice to taste that good is beyond me.

Jeremy ordered the Spicy Lamb Sausage served with furnisto potatoes and sliced peppers. When the dish arrived, I think we were both a little taken aback with the sausages. They looked like breakfast sausages you would get at a diner, or  McDonald’s. But once we tried them we were blown away with the flavor. It wasn’t too spicy, which I enjoyed, and we devoured them.

Schmackary’s Gluten Free Cookies // Hell’s Kitchen NYC

One of the best discoveries I’ve made since moving to New York City in September is Schmackary’s gluten free cookies.

Schmackary’s is located off 9th Avenue in Hell’s Kitchen, which is both good (it’s convenient) and bad (it’s so close, I go all the time!)

The menu features over 45 types of “modern cookie classics” and “seasonal cookie sensations” that rotate daily and seasonally. Everyday they offer one or two gluten free cookies and one gluten free macaroons

The gluten free flavors include:

Yogi Bare: {V, N} gluten free oats / peanut butter / applesauce / cranberries / almonds / sunflower seeds / pumpkin seeds / raisins / maple syrup / cinnamon

Surprisingly, I loved this flavor. I’m not a big matcha fan, but the flavor is mild and the white chocolate chips add a nice sweetness.

Delicious toasted marshmallow frosting tops a mildly flavored cookie. I couldn’t taste the yams, I was worried it would be too strong but it was judt fine.

Eggnog: gluten free sugar base / eggnog frosting / cinnamon

The cookies are soft and gooey and keep me coming back for more. I can’t say enough good things about the cookies. Although, I would like to see more gluten free options each day!

Gotham West Market is a first-of-its-kind retail and dining destination in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood. This food hall Market is more like Eataly, Smorgasburg, and Chelsea Market all rolled into one for a new type of dining experience.

At Gotham West Market, you have the option of dining at the respective eateries or ordering food to go and enjoy their meal throughout the Market’s stylish communal seating areas.

During my first visit to Gotham West Market I found myself at El Colmado, a classic Spanish tapas and wine bar. (surprise, surprise) El Colmado, or “the grocer,” refers to the small, family-owned gourmet shops found throughout Spain that celebrate the artisanal olive oils, vinegars, and preserved seafoods for which the country is famous.

El Colmado offers a menu of both traditional and creative Spanish fare, ranging in size from mordiscos (snacks), tapas (bites to share), and medias (small plates).

La Carafe, a French restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, offers a variety of gluten free small plates, salads, and entrées.

They offer delicious, fresh food, a happy hour and reasonably priced meals.

Gluten free appetizers and small plates include: smoked salmon, cheese plate, escargot, hummus with vegetables, grilled asparagus, mussels, moussaka, grape leaves, marinated beans, assorted olives, and cream of yogurt.

Fresh and flavorful escargot, not too buttery at all. Nice balance of garlic.



Entrees include everything from steak and veal to salmon and chicken.

I had the Nicoise Salad with fresh tuna, tomatoes, onions, radish, bell pepper, parsley, olives, and eggs.

Happy hour is every day from 4-7pm and includes $5 glasses of wine and $8 martinis, mojitos, and margaritas.

I love the ambiance here. It feels like an old time Parisian café; romantic and cozy without being too small.

Our server was very polite and attentive, even the busboy kept coming by to refill our water glasses all night. But be aware, some of the server’s English is very basic, so you should call ahead and explain your allergy or find the manager if you need to clarify anything.

Inti NYC Restaurant – Peruvian Cuisine // Hell’s Kitchen

Inti is a comfortable, low key restaurant serving authentic Peruvian cuisine. Inti NYC Restaurant has many options for gluten free diners. Choose from a selection of options that include chicken, beef and seafood dishes. Many of the dishes are rice or quinoa based and naturally gluten free. There are only a few menu items that are not gluten free. These include: empanadas, Arroz Chaufa (Peruvian style Chinese fried rice), fried calamari, and the fried seafood platter.

Instead of complimentary bread that is offered at most restaurants, here each table is given cancha; giant toasted corn kernels. These kernels have a slightly nutty and salty taste, very crunchy and absolutely delicious. The cancha is served with aji verde, a spicy light green cream sauce. Peruvian choclo, or corn, has giant sized kernels and is featured in many of the dishes.


INTI, above all, is known for their ceviche. The Ceviche Mixto ($16) is a traditional dish consisting of fresh fish chunks, shrimp, octopus and calamari marinated in lime juice, and mixed with red onions, cilantro and rocoto hot pepper, served with sweet potatoes and baby corn.


This ceviche had a little kick to it, and it was incredibly fresh. You must try it.

For $14 you can get a whole rotisserie chicken. This is a steal! Not only a great price, but it was perfectly moist and tender. This is a great dish to share.


For $32 you can get a whole chicken plus rice, beans, French fries, sweet fried plantains and salad.

Jeremy and I also shared the Camarones Inti ($18) –Shrimp sautéed with shallots, cilantro, white wine and yellow pepper sauce, served with white rice. The sauce had great flavor, was light and mild.


For dessert we shared Flan ($6). A baked custard served with caramel sauce, Flan is the only gluten free dessert option and is quite delicious.


Inti is also BYOB. They do have a $12 corkage fee but in my mind it is worth it. There is a full bar, with wine available by the glass and bottle, starting at $25.

The servers are friendly and the food is delicious. We love ceviche and this one was up there with our favorites.

Gluten Free Options at Tavola // Hell’s Kitchen

So far I love living in Manhattan. My neighborhood is full of restaurants and I’m so excited to try all of them, eventually. My cousin took us to Travola to celebrate our recent move to NYC. He loves this restaurant, and now I know why.

Tavola means “table” in Italian. The cuisine here is based on regional Italian fare, mainly Puglian, Roman, and Sicilian. Inspired by owner Nick Accardi’s extensive travels to these regions, especially the town of Castelvetrano, the source of Nick’s family roots, Tavola offers quality Italian cuisine made with regional ingredients, including single estate castelvetrano olives and extra virgin olive oil, which he exclusively imports and can be purchased at Tavola.

The menu features a variety of gluten free options from salads, and appetizers, to pasta, fish and filet mignon.

Wood roasted Pimientos de Padrone ($8), a traditional Spanish tapa from the Galician region, is one of Jeremy and my favorite dishes. We just spent a week in Galicia and ate countless Padron Peppers, and we just had to order them.


This is a great dish for sharing. Although we enjoyed them, we’re not sure if these were not the “real” deal. In Spain, the peppers are drenched in olive oil then grilled. Here, it was very similar, but not nearly as blistered.

The Grilled Local Calamari ($14.50) was by far our favorite. Served on a bed of greens with lemon and capers, the dish was fresh and light.


For my entrée I tried the Vongole; Manila clams, roasted garlic, Italian parsley, pepperoncino, and olive oil.


Any pasta dish can be substituted with gluten free penne for an extra $2. While I enjoyed the dish very much, the pasta was great and cooked to perfection; the portion was a bit small for $19.50.

One thing to note, they will not substitute any sauce on any dish. So if you are like me and can also not eat dairy, most of the pasta dishes are off limits. This is too bad because I really wanted to try the wild salmon and pesto dish without the cream sauce.

Over all we all enjoyed our night at Tavola. We loved the ambiance. The vibe is welcoming and not too casual but not too over the top either. Jeremy and Rob loved the pizza (not gluten free L) and I would recommend you try it for brunch, lunch or dinner if you are looking for an authentic Italian meal with plenty of gluten free options.
