It’s not every day you can easily prepare just one meal for the whole table. Barilla Gluten Free Pasta is certified gluten free and produced on a dedicated gluten free line, for a tasty pasta that everybody can enjoy and feel safe. And pasta lovers will be glad to know that it looks and tastes just like classic pasta.

Barilla gluten free pasta made with a  blend of non-GMO corn and rice. Barilla gluten free pasta comes in a variety of shapes, including Rotini, Spaghetti, Elbows, Fettuccine and Penne.

Barilla is actually one of Jeremy’s favorite gluten free pastas – he likes the taste and the texture.

With Barilla Gluten Free Pasta, you get rid of the gluten — not the flavor — and focus on the most important part of dinner: having the whole family together. And, Barilla retails for $2.99/box – that is a great price!

Celebrating Non-GMO Month with Pereg Qunioa Pasta

October is Non-GMO Month, the largest outreach campaign of the Non-GMO Project, according to Non-GMO News.

The Non-GMO Project label verifies that a product doesn’t contain genetically modified (GMO) ingredients.  Non-genetically modified means that plants or organisms are left as they are, as they were created in nature. In genetic modification, one or more of the genes has been altered using genetic engineering techniques, creating a new DNA. Some scientists, consumers and environmental groups cite health and environmental risks associated with foods that have been genetically modified (designated GMO).

Thus, a movement in the food industry for Non-GMO products was created, and more and more manufacturers, as well as consumers, are jumping onto the Non-GMO band wagon, especially in the natural food, organic and health food industries.

Pereg Natural Foods is a leading producer of Non-GMO food products which also happen to be all natural, kosher, vegan, non-dairy and gluten free. They include a range of foods: gluten-free flours in six varieties, gluten free pasta, premium spices and spice blends, ancient grains, and an extensive line of quinoa and couscous products. Pereg Natural Foods manufactures all its products from start to finish, controlling the quality from the sourcing until the product is packed and ready for the consumer.

Says Gill Schneider, President, Pereg Natural Foods, “From the get-go Pereg Natural Foods has been producing its food products using Non-GMO verified ingredients, while many other companies are just now switching form GMO. While genetic modification affects many of the products we consume on a daily basis, we at Pereg are proud to offer our customers premium food products made from all natural ingredients, that are healthful, nutritious and delicious, and Non-GMO verified.”

Family-owned since 1906, Pereg Natural Foods strives to provide its customers with the best products the world has to offer.  All of the brand’s offerings are 100% pure, fresh and natural and never include any additives, preservatives, fillers, MSG, or food coloring. In addition, every product is certified kosher by the OU and CRC.

I’ve cooked with Pereg spices before and was very excited to their all natural quinoa pasta. Made from 100% quinoa flour, the quinoa pasta has more carbs and protein per serving than most pastas. It has a firmer texture than traditional pasta and a distinct nutty quinoa-like taste that I really like.

Pereg Quinoa Pasta is available in three shapes: curvo rigate, fusilli and spaghetti.

Pereg products are available at select natural and health food stores, kosher supermarkets and online.

Le Veneziane Gluten Free Pasta and Mini Grissini

Many people don’t realize that Italy has one of the highest celiac rates in Europe, partly because celiac disease is one of the first diseases physicians look for, rather than the last as here in the U.S.  Perhaps due to this higher incidence, Italy is home to Europe’s largest manufacturer of gluten-free pasta, breads, and pastries.

Quattrobimbi has found some of Italy’s best gluten free products and imports them for easy online shopping in the US. One company they have imported for years, and which I just tried for the first time, is Le Veneziane. Le Veneziane makes gluten free pasta in every shape and form, gnocchi, lasagna noodles and mini grissini (mini breadsticks).

“Le Veneziane” is the range of gluten-free pasta by Molino di Ferro, made with easy-to-digest corn flour. The pasta’s rich natural carotenes convey it a characteristic golden yellow colour. It is also enhanced by its low fat content.

The mini grissini come in 3 flavors – traditional with olive oil, sesame/chia seeds and rosemary – and are absolutely delicious. The fragrant, flavorful and crispy mini breadsticks are irresistible. They are made with select Italian extra virgin olive oil and the outstanding quality of the ingredients used means that they are a great alternative to bread.

Le Veneziane Potato Gnocchi is a traditional Italian Potato Gnocchi in a shelf-stable package. It’s hard to find real, gluten free Italian potato gnocchi, and this one is delicious. Did I mention it is also vegan? The gnocchi takes just a few minutes to cook and can be paired with your favorite Italian sauce. I love that it comes in two practical, stay-fresh, tubs, and are perfect for cooking for one or more. I kept it simple and served it with a simple meat sauce. Simple yet delicious!

All Le Veneziane pastas are made from non-GMO Italian corn and are certified Kosher.

Gluten Free Options at Artu // North End & Beacon Hill

Artu was founded on the most basic Italian technique, great ingredients, simply prepared, that is what Artu is all about. This Italian restaurant has two locations; in the North End and Beacon Hill.

In February of 1992 Artu opened its doors to the world, starting with outstanding sandwiches and mouth watering roasted meats, and has continued to evolve and grow. Since then Artu has steadily added to their repertoire. Focusing on simple ingredients and Italian preparation, their menu offers both classic and modern style Italian dishes. Many dishes are made using family recipes that have been passed down and still made the same to this day.

Artu offers a variety of appetizers, seafood and meat entrees, as well as gluten free pasta dishes. Many of the items on Artu’s menu can be prepared gluten free, and dairy free too!

On Tuesday night, Katie and I were invited to dinner at Artu, hosted by Blog and Tweet Boston. The staff were welcoming and friendly throughout the entire evening and the food was delicious.

Artu offers a creative cocktial menu and Italian Wine list. The American Mule and Madre, made with Limoncello, Prosecco and raspberry seeds, were refreshing after a long hot day.

Two of the gluten free dishes on the appetizer menu include Seared Sea Scallops with cauliflower and cipollini puree, and Roasted Beets with gorgonzola topped with Pistachio vinaigrette.

Gluten free pasta can be substituted in almost every pasta dish on the menu, except for the ravioli. The gluten free Penne Puttanesca is made with chili flakes, San Marzano tomatoes, capers, olives, anchovy, garlic.

Main Course (Secondi) menu options include everything from grilled lamb and steak, to lobster and fresh fish. After eating two appetizers and pasta, I went with one of the lighter options, salmon. It was gently cooked to perfection, and served with buttered brussels sprouts, potato puree and finished with a truffle vinaigrette.

For dessert, if you have any room left after your meal, Artu offers a gluten free flourless chocolate cake.

Artu has one of latest liquor licenses in the North End, serving delicious libations until 2 A.M. Not only are drinks available, but Artu offers a late night menu for those who need a midnight snack!

Gluten Free Menu at Nebo Restaurant

Nebo Cucina and Enoteca is an amazing Italian restaurant located on Boston’s Greenway that has offered guests an extensive gluten-free menu for the past 10+ years. An authentic Italian restaurant in the heart of the city that cuts all gluten without cutting any taste…that’s amore!
From a variety of appetizers, pizzas, pasta dishes to their infamous Bobby Flay Throwdown-winning zucchini lasagna, Nebo offers an expansive gluten-free menu
Nebo carries Tito’s vodka, which is used or can be used in any of their vodka drinks to make it gluten free!
Last week I was invited to check out Nebo’s gluten free menu. I had been once before and had the pizza, which was delicious, so I was excited to go back and try some of the other gluten free options.
Nebo has a separate fryer for gluten free foods to avoid cross contamination. They also use dedicated pots and pans for boiling the gluten free pasta, which is homemade but made off site to avoid cross contamination in the kitchen. The gluten free pizzas are made on dedicated gluten free trays. While the entire kitchen is not gluten free, they have done everything they can to avoid cross contamination and keep the food as safe as possible.
Speaking of the fryer, my sister and I tried the fried mixed plate, with calamari, spelt and shrimp. I can’t remember the last time I had fried shrimp! This appetizer was big enough to be a meal!
We also share the Grilled octopus appetizer.
For entrees, Nebo offers both gluten free penne pasta and gluten free pizza options, as well as seafood and meat dishes. The pizza is delicious, but this time we opted for a pasta dish with sweet sausage and broccoli rabe.
We also share the Acqua Pazza, “Crazy Water”, pan seared arctic char, baby clams, capers, olives, fennel and tomato brodo.
For dessert we shared the flourless chocolate cake topped with ice cream and pistachios.
Whether you or a friend has a gluten intolerance or allergy, Nebo is a great Italian restaurant you should try. With options to please every palate – spicy and not spicy, meat eaters and vegetarians – there is something on the menu for everyone!

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse Gluten Free Options // Midtown East

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse first opened on Newbury Street in Boston back in 1985. Since then, they have expanded to cities across the U.S. including 3 additional locations in MA – Chestnut Hill, Foxborough, and Lynnfield – Manhattan, Philadelphia and Atlanta.

At Davio’s everything is made by hand from the best ingredients. They Serve everything from aged steaks to simple-yet-unique pasta creations. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. And I had the chance to eat there last night for the first time!

Davio’s offers an extensive gluten free lunch and dinner menu including appetizers, pasta dishes, salads, steaks, seafood and more. And when it comes to the drinks, don’t fret! Davio’s serves Tito’s gluten free vodka so you can enjoy their delicious cocktails before, or during, your meal.

                            Albicocca cocktail

I invited my soon-to-be sister in-law to join me for dinner last night. For starters we shared the Grilled Spanish Octopus with Risotto Nero and Plum Sauce for our appetizer.

All pasta dishes are available in appetizer portions, so we also shared the Gluten Free Pasta with Organic Mushrooms, Basil, and White Truffle Oil. Davio’s offers a rice-based fusilli pasta that is used in any gluten free pasta dish.

Picking an entree was difficult. Davio’s offers so many cuts of meat, it was hard to choose. Filet mignon, aged New York Sirloin, Ribeye, veal and pork chop are just a few meat dishes on the menu. We ordered the 8 oz center cut filet mignon that was juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The meat just melted in my mouth.

We also shared the Atlantic Salmon with two sides; spicy broccoli rabe and roasted brussel sprouts with carrot puree and almonds.

FullSizeRender (1)

Although we were both full, we made room for dessert! Davio’s gluten free dessert options include panna cotta, ice cream and sorbet. Last night’s sorbet flavors were: spiced pineapple mango, peary good and sweet melon. One of each please!

The gracious hospitality and attentive staff provide an exceptional dining experience, and I would recommend it to all my gluten free, and non gluten free, readers!

On Friday, April 8th, 2016, Davio’s Manhattan will host a four-course prix fixe gluten free dinner to celebrate bestselling author of The Gluten Free Revolution, Jax Peters Lowell. In addition to highlighting Davio’s signature gluten free menu items, the dinner will feature dishes from renowned chefs Thomas Keller and Bobby Flay. Fig filled cookie

Jovial gluten free pasta & cookies

Have you heard of Jovial cookies and pasta? I had heard of it, but I had never tried either until recently when I was asked to review them, and I am so glad I did!

Crafted in Italy using time-honored production methods and carefully selected varieties of rice, Jovial brown rice pasta is as close to traditional as gluten free can be. Jovial brown rice pasta was developed for taste and texture first, gluten free second. Master artisans in Tuscany, Italy have skillfully transformed 100% brown rice flour into the most authentic gluten free pasta available. There is no need to feel like you are sacrificing any longer when eating gluten free. This healthful pasta will adapt perfect to your favorite recipe.

Jeremy and I loved the firm texture and delicate flavor of the pasta. It was just as you would hope a gluten free pasta would taste. The pasta is available in 7 shapes, including:

  1. penne
  2. fusilli
  3. caserecce
  4. capellini
  5. spaghetti
  6. lasagna
  7. tagliatelle

I can’t tell you the last time I had tagliatelle egg noodles, and Jovial’s has the taste and texture of traditional tagliatelle I remember eating years ago.

Jovial cookies come in 3 varieties:

  1. sour cherry
  2. chocolate cream
  3. fig filled

Jovial gluten free cookies are baked in small batches, ingredients are mixed by hand and a unique and delicate process hides the filling in the center of the cookie before baking. The fig filled cookie was the closest thing I have had to a fig newton in years. With a tempting soft center filled with Mediterranean fig filling, it was sumptuous yet not overly sweet. The cookies are individually wrapped in packages of 2 for freshness and convenience. The fig filled cookies are also casein free.

The chocolate cream cookies were my favorite. These European style sandwich cream cookies have a slightly crunchy chocolaty outside, as opposed to the fig cookies which has a softer outside, and a classic Italian hazelnut, chocolate cream filling.

Caring about the environment means caring about the packaging. Jovial Brown Rice pasta is packaged in a carton made from 80% recycled cardboard and is 100% recyclable. The inner bag is certified 100% compostable, made from FSC certified wood pulp.

The cookies are made in a facility that was specifically designed to ensure an absolutely safe product, but it is not dedicated gluten free. They bake with dedicated equipment on separate production days. Certified gluten free at less than 10PPM.  Jovial® brown rice pasta is made in a dedicated facility free of gluten, casein, eggs, tree nuts and peanuts, but may contain traces of soy.

You can purchase Jovial products online and in stores nationwide, including Whole Foods, Stop & Shops, and hundreds of natural food stores. To find a store location nearest you, click here

Modern Table Meals NEW Meal Kits and Bean Pastas

Modern Table Meals is a line of healthy, yummy, and easy to make pasta meal kits. Everything you need is in the bag! this includes thr bean-based pastas, dried veggies, sauce + seasoning to customize the flavor to your tastes.

For many, myself included, cooking dinner on busy weeknights can be a challenge some nights. While it is tough, I don’t want to sacrifice nutrition and quality just to be able to have the convenience of making something from a box, a frozen pizza, or worse, picking up something greasy and unhealthy at a fast food restaurant. This is where Modern Table meals come in. These meals are SO fast and easy to prepare and are full of quality, gluten-free ingredients that make you feel like you are getting a meal made from scratch. The best part? They don’t have a bunch of chemical ridden preservatives and “fake” ingredient. I love that the ingredients are things I know and that the ingredient list is minimal.

I was first introduced to Modern Table Meals back in June when I tried the ITALIAN bean pasta and veggie kit. In addition to this kit Modern Table Meals offers 4 other gluten free meal kits: Mediterranean, Southwest and the newest additions to the line, Homestyle Mac & Cheese, and Pesto.

I like the heartiness of the pasta, but be ware it does have a very different taste and than your traditional pasta and the consistency is also much denser. This is not a problem for me, I actually enjoyed the flavor of the pasta, but Jeremy did not. I was surprised by how much I liked the Mac & Cheese and how fresh the flavors tasted. But I LOVED the Pesto with Citrus Herb Seasonings. Yum! And dinner was ready in less than 20 minutes, even better!

For those who like to get creative in the kitchen, Modern Table Meals also sells just plain bean pastas! All 3 bean pastas – Mixed Lentil Penne, Confetti, and Lentil Penne – offer the perfect start to any pasta dish. The pastas are made from Green & Red Lentils, and the confetti is also made with black beans. I love that the pasta is something different then just the traditional brown rice or corn gluten-free pastas you often find on the market. These lentil and bean pastas are nutrient dense, full of flavor and an excellent addition of fiber in your diet. They are also a great addition of plant based protein with 12-20 grams of protein and 5-7 grams of fiber per serving, and are full of vitamins your body needs.
