Gluten Free Options at Bangkok Cuisine // Upper East Side

Bangkok Cuisine, one of the first Thai Culinary Arts restaurants, is located on the Upper East Side is deigned to imitate a Thai Palace.  The food is traditional, regional and modernized Thai Fusion, and their most coveted dish is the home-made Pad Thai dish, which is gluten free!

Bangkok Cuisine is beautifully designed as a traditional Thai Palace through marble décor, with Swarski crystal chandeliers, elegant French glassware and stoneware of the highest caliber with gold embellishments. Waitresses  wear royal garb to make customers feel that their dining in a royal Thai palace. Furthermore, Bangkok Cuisine’s food is created by a chef with over 15 years experience in traditional, regional and modernized Thai fusion preparations.

The menu features everything from traditional and regional Thai dishes to modernized Thai fusion preparations that use French cooking techniques. In order to maintain the quality of its food and the authenticity of classic Thai cuisine, the restaurant uses only ingredients of the highest caliber, carefully selecting the finest herbs and spices native to Thailand. What sets it apart is that everything here is fresh and homemade, including spices ground on the premises and sauces made from scratch.

Last night Amit, my soon-to-be sister-in-law, and I had a delicious meal. We tried a few of the gluten free options and were very impressed. I started with a Lychee Martini, which I’ve never had before. It was not too sweet, luckily, and did not taste like vodka, another plus for me. It made me feel as if I was back in Thailand sitting on a tropical beach.

The fried tofu was light and airy with a delicious, mild chili sauce. The Fresh summer rolls were fresh and served with a peanut dipping sauce.

We shared the Seafood Tom Yum Pad Thai and it was delicious! It was so flavorful yet light and dull of shrimp, mussels and calamari. We were scrapping the plate trying to eat up every last bite.

We were too full to order dessert, but they do offer Mango Sticky Rice that can be made gluten free.

Green Festival®, America’s largest and longest-running sustainability and green living event, will return to the Javits Convention Center April 15-17 to celebrate Earth Day weekend. Marking its fifth year in New York City, Green Festival has become an annual celebration of green living for New Yorkers and the local green community, serving as the city’s most prominent yearly showcase for green brands and sustainable lifestyles.

In addition, for the first time, Green Festival will kick-off a series of screenings across the nation of the acclaimed documentary, Cowspiracy – The Sustainability Secret, to raise awareness of the harmful effects of one of the planet’s most destructive industries, animal agriculture. In partnership with A.U.M. Films, Green Festival will host screenings of Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuhn’s film at all five 2016 expos in the U.S. The documentary film is streaming exclusively on Netflix, and this version was produced by Oscar-winning environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson and Appian Way Productions.

Rice Cream Shoppe offers 18 gluten free flavors!

Spoon your way to gluten free happiness at Rice Cream Shoppe.  This rice pudding lover’s paradise offers 18 gluten free flavors – six of which are also vegan!

Rice Cream Shoppe opened a few weeks ago on Bleecker Street in the West Village. I finally made my way down there over the weekend and met with one of the owners, Nino, and tried my very first New York City rice pudding. 

All rice puddings are made on premises at this vintage-meets-whimsy café decorated with red and aqua-colored stripes and wall illustrations by artist Leif Parsons. All ingredients that are put into the machines/equipment are gluten free, so there is no cross contamination. The only gluten in the entire cafe comes from cookie crumbs, that are sprinkled on top of two flavors, and a brioche bun. Other than that, everything is gluten free.

Gluten Free Options at Estancia 460 // Tribeca

Estancia 460 reflects the Italian and Spanish culinary influences in Argentina.  Estancia translates as a ranch house and the restaurant emulates that with its white washed brick walls, high ceilings, wooden tables and chairs.  Here you can enjoy gluten free pizzas, pastas, sizzling shrimp, and grass-fed beef while sipping on wines from a diverse list or an expertly mixed, and creatively named, cocktail.  The crowd feels like an extended family which many come to dine at the bar, or as large groups to enjoy the Parillada, a mixed grill of meats.  Estancia has been feeding the locals and Tribeca celebs since 1995 and has developed relationships with beloved regulars as well as newcomers from outside the neighborhood. They choose us as their go to place for hearty unpretentious fare in a low key and intimate setting.

Gluten Free Options at Delicatessen // NoLita

On Wednesday night i joined a group of gluten free food bloggers to check out the gluten free options at Delicatessen. Michael Ferraro is the Executive Chef and Partner at Delicatessen, cooking up a menu that “appeals to the masses” and is best described as international comfort food. We met Chef Michael who told us that over 50% of his menu is naturally gluten free or can be made gluten free!

The menu offers something for everything; from salads and brussel sprouts, to burgers, fish and truffle fries(oh my!), there is literally something for all taste buds. Below are some highlights from our meal:

Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse first opened on Newbury Street in Boston back in 1985. Since then, they have expanded to cities across the U.S. including 3 additional locations in MA – Chestnut Hill, Foxborough, and Lynnfield – Manhattan, Philadelphia and Atlanta. 

At Davio’s everything is made by hand from the best ingredients. They Serve everything from aged steaks to simple-yet-unique pasta creations. The food is delicious and the service is impeccable. And I had the chance to eat there last night for the first time! 

Davio’s offers an extensive gluten free lunch and dinner menu including appetizers, pasta dishes, salads, steaks, seafood and more. And when it comes to the drinks, don’t fret! Davio’s serves Tito’s gluten free vodka so you can enjoy their delicious cocktails before, or during, your meal.

I invited my soon-to-be sister in-law to join me for dinner last night. For starters we shared the Grilled Spanish Octopus with Risotto Nero and Plum Sauce for our appetizer.

All pasta dishes are available in appetizer portions, so we also shared the Gluten Free Pasta with Organic Mushrooms, Basil, and White Truffle Oil. Davio’s offers a rice-based fusilli pasta that is used in any gluten free pasta dish.

Picking an entree was difficult. Davio’s offers so many cuts of meat, it was hard to choose. Filet mignon, aged New York Sirloin, Ribeye, veal and pork chop are just a few meat dishes on the menu. We ordered the 8 oz center cut filet mignon that was juicy, tender and cooked to perfection. The meat just melted in my mouth.

We also shared the Atlantic Salmon with two sides; spicy broccoli rabe and roasted brussel sprouts with carrot puree and almonds.

Although we were both full, we made room for dessert! Davio’s gluten free dessert options include panna cotta, ice cream and sorbet. Last night’s sorbet flavors were: spiced pineapple mango, peary good and sweet melon. One of each please!

Senza Gluten Free / 100% Gluten Free Dining in Greenwich Village

In Italian, “senza” means without and at this restaurant, the only thing you’ll go without is the gluten!

Senza Gluten is one of the only completely gluten-free Italian restaurants in New York City’s Greenwich Village offering an extensive menu that is not only delicious but safe for those intolerant to gluten. Diners will find anything from homemade pizza to gnocchi and parmigiana. Let’s not forget brunch. After listening to feedback from their customers, Senza just started offering weekend brunch. The menu includes everything from French toast and pancakes, to frittata, quiche, fresh breads and baked goods for days! 

Over the weekend I was invited to Senza Gluten to try their new brunch menu. Upon entering the restaurant I was greeted with a warm welcome, I felt like I was entering a friends home. The restaurant is on the smaller side, so I would recommend making a reservation, especially for dinner. 

While Chef Jemiko L Solo is still finalizing the brunch menu (it will be available online in the coming weeks), it features everything you usually can’t get when you go out to brunch at an ordinary restaurants. Pancakes, French toast and egg dishes are just the beginning. Chef Solo makes quiche, scones, muffins, and breads fresh daily.

I ordered the gluten free French toast, and let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS! Senna uses Everybody Eats‘ (a gluten free, nut free bakery in Brooklyn) bread for their French toast. The toast was thick and fluffy and Jeremy said you would never know that it was gluten free. If it passes the Jeremy test, then you know it’s gotta be good.

Jeremy ordered a goat cheese and baby spinach omelette with the best house roasted potatoes with garlic, EVOO and rosemary. We eat a lot of breakfast potatoes and these have officially become our #1 favorite in NYC. The omelette is served with grilled bread, that is not only gluten free but also vegan, so perfect for anyone who doesn’t eat dairy either! 

So, why did Chef Solo decide to open a gluten free restaurant? I asked the same question!  Chef  Solo has over  twenty-five years of experience in the kitchens. He personally does not have celiac disease or gluten sensitivity but has many friends around him that are gluten-intolerant and have other food allergies. Chef Jemiko L Solo says “I made a promise to all of my friends that one day I would do something to make it safer for them to eat out. This is the reason why I decided to open a 100% gluten-free restaurant called Senza Gluten. Regarding Italy, well, who doesn’t love Italian food?”. Jemiko adds that it is “often hard to find traditional Italian pastas, pastries, baked goods and more” that are completely gluten free. Senza Gluten is his way to prove that “no one should have to miss out on flavor, texture, or delicious options” because of an intolerance to gluten. I wish I had a friend like that!

And if you have other allergies or dietary restrictions, Senza has you covered! Sense’s brunch menu features vegan breads and plenty of dairy free options. The main menu has even more. Just call ahead and let the Chef know you are coming in and what you like and what you can not eat. He will make sure to make you something delicious and safe. 

If you haven’t tried Senza Gluten yet, I don’t know what you are waiting for! Not only is the food good – whether you are gluten free or not, you will enjoy it – but, the Chef really cares about his customers. He listed when they asked for brunch. He listed when they asked for other dishes, and even made them staples on the menu. He listens to what people want and need and makes it happen. Jeremy and I will be back soon for dinner!
