Bobo’s Oat Bars – Gluten Free and Vegan

On a rainy afternoon in 2003, Beryl Stafford and her daughter “Bobo” baked oat bars that soon became a Boulder, CO cafe favorite. A simple recipe offered an unassuming oat bar recipe that was the perfect antidote to the grey day… and together they baked the first Oat Bar and the same exact recipe still used by Bobo’s today.

In 2003, when Bobo’s was getting its first footholds throughout the Front Range shelves and shops, the snack bar category was in its earliest days. Most of it then (and still today) offered little in the way of hearty, wholesome and simple. From the very beginning, Bobo’s committed to baking in simple ways with a simple ingredient list with simple language and simple packaging. And while the snack bar category has gone absolutely bonkers, very little with Bobo’s has changed.

IMG_1853

Bobo’s Oat Bars are certified gluten free – made in a gluten free facility and testing is done on every batch – dairy free, vegan, Kosher. There are several flavors of Bobo’s that contain tree nuts and/or peanuts. Bobo’s has an allergen program in place to prevent cross contact with these allergens, but it is recommended that those with allergies to these ingredients exercise caution when eating Bobo products.

Bobo’s Oat Bars are available in 15 flavors:

  • Original
  • Coconut
  • Cranberry Orange
  • Banana Chocolate Chip
  • Chocolate Chip
  • Cinnamon Raisin
  • Peanut Butter
  • Almond Butter
  • Peach
  • Maple Pecan
  • Coconut Almond Chocolate Chip
  • Lemon Poppyseed
  • Apple Pie
  • PB + J
  • Gingerbread

The bars are dense and will keep you full for hours. Each bar is two servings and if you eat the whole thing it’s like eating a small meal. The bar was great for a post-workout breakfast and kept me full until lunch time.

While I found the Original to be somewhat plain in flavor, I loved the coconut! The Coconut bar combines hearty oats and sweet coconut flakes that give it a slight sweetness. I also enjoyed the Banana Chocolate Chip. It was a little chewier than the others with a sweet banana and chocolate chip taste – it tasted like homemade banana bread. The first bite almost tastes like a donut; sweet – but not too sweet – and keeps you coming back for more. Maybe I haven’t had a donut in while…

Bobo’s Oat Bars are available at Whole Foods Markets, Safeway, REI, and hundreds of other locations throughout the US. You can also purchase Bobo’s Oat Bars on Amazon. There currently is a promotion on Amazon to save 15% off any Bobo’s Oat Bars order. Click here to get the coupon.

Siete Family Foods launches new Grain Free Tortilla Chips

Look out chip aisle, there are new players in town! While we’ve recently seen a prevalence of grain-free snacks to munch on, Siete Family Foods has taken it a step further with grain-free tortilla chips made from anti-inflammatory ingredients like cassava flour.

IMG_1643

Over the summer I tried Siete’s grain free tortillas, which I loved, so I was thrilled to learn about their new line of chips and even more thrilled to try them!

Made with cassava flour, avocado oil, and other real food ingredients, the chips come in three classic flavor varieties: Sea Salt, Nacho, and Lime. With demand for anti-inflammatory and better-for-you snacks on the rise, Siete’s chips satisfy both taste and dietary needs.

My favorite flavor is Sea Salt. It tastes like a fresh tortilla chip you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. The avocado oil gives it a delicious and slightly oily flavor that I love. These are my new favorite chips! We served them during Sunday’s football party and our friends devoured them! I will definitely be getting more before our Superbowl party!

All three varieties of Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips are Non-GMO Project Verified, Gluten-Free Certified, and are completely free of corn, wheat, rice, beans, soy, and dairy. The paleo and vegan-friendly chips are perfect for snacking straight out of the bag, as well as for pairing with fresh salsa or guacamole, yum!

Siete Grain Free Tortilla Chips will be available for purchase at Whole Foods Market locations nationwide starting January 2017 (SRP $4.99) and I saw them at my local Whole Foods for the first time yesterday! Click here to find a location nearest you.

Brio Ice Cream

So we love ice cream at my house and I was so excited when I had the chance to try Brio ice cream.

IMG_1645

Brio was founded by food pioneers and twin brothers Ron and Arnie Koss, who also founded the first organic baby food company, Earth’s Best. In order to create their latest trend-setting brand, the Koss brothers enlisted the help of former Ben & Jerry’s flavor developers and secured two patents, resulting in a product that’s a true ice cream lover’s “friend with benefits.”

Brio is packed with organic whole milk, probiotics, 24 micronutrients and a healthy balance of Omegas. Perfect for a post-workout mini meal or a guilt-free comfort food snack, Brio proves that ice cream is no longer just for dessert. It’s also non-GMO, gluten free, Kosher and low-glycemic.

IMG_1648

Even if you try to eat well, you probably miss some nutrients, especially in our fast-paced world. Brio is ice cream reimagined in the healthiest way possible; you get the benefit of healthy nutrients you’d never know were there.

These healthy nutrients include:

  • Antioxidants (Vitamins A, C and E)
  • Electrolytes (including potassium, magnesium and sodium)
  • B-Vitamins (including B12 and Folic Acid)
  • Calcium, Magnesium and Vitamin D
  • Vitamin K
  • Zinc, Iron and Other Essential Minerals
  • To help maximize absorption of key fat-soluble vitamins (like Vitamins A and E), Brio also includes a healthy balance of Omega 3-6-9 fats.
  • Probiotics

The probiotics in Brio are freezer friendly; ordinary probiotics can’t survive the cold temperatures and harsh environment of the freezer.

To round out Brio’s digestive benefits package, they’ve also added prebiotics, a non-digestible food ingredient that helps increase beneficial microorganisms in the intestines. Brio’s prebiotics come from all-natural, organic inulin, a starchy substance from guar gum bean fiber and agave.

IMG_1647

Flavors include creamy Madagascar Vanilla, Café Latte, Very Strawberry, Dark Chocolate, Tropical Mango and Sea Salt Caramel. While Jeremy loved the fruity flavors, I am more of a vanilla and cafe latte kind of girl. With that said, Jeremy loved and ate every single flavor.

You can find Brio Ice Cream at Stop and Shop grocery stores, as well as dozens of other stores across the country. Click here to find a retail location nearest you.

Davidson’s Organics tea-infused jellies and chocolates

Davidson’s Organics, the first certified organic, fair trade, and specialty tea company in the US, introduces organic tea chocolates and tea-infused jellies to its product line of over 400 tea varieties. The new products were launched this year, the same year Davidson’s Organics celebrates it’s 40th anniversary.

img_1496

Tea lovers with a sweet tooth will love the new tea chocolates. The tea chocolates are a meritage of Indian and South American delicacies, combing third-generation cacao beans from Esmeraldas, Ecuador with traditional tea leaves from Darjeeling, India. Davidson’s tea chocolates maintain the integrity and health benefits of the tea, as leaves are sprinkled throughout a 65 percent cacao Arriba blend.

Flavors include Earl Grey Lavender, Classic Chai and Coconut Vanilla. Earl Grey and Classic Chai are both made from black tea, rich in antioxidants and caffeine. The rooibos base of Coconut Vanilla can be used as a stress and insomnia reliever. This infusion combines a South American delicacy with a timeless tea tradition, creating a luxurious treat for all tea and chocolate lovers to delight in. The tea flavor is definetly there, but in no way overpowering.

Davidson’s tea jellies are made from brewed organic tea blends, organic cane sugar, and pectin. They complement fine cheeses, meats, crackers and deserts.

davidsons-tea-jelly

Flavors include Earl Grey, Classic Chai, White Pomegranate and Coconut Vanilla. The rooibos base in White Pomegranate is said to have cancer preventing properties.

Every tea, every spice and every herb used in any of Davidson’s blend derives from small tea producers or small disenfranchised farmers throughout the world. All products are Certified Fair Trade, Organic, and Kosher. So, what product will you try first?

Wild Planet Releases Its First Family Size Can of Sustainable Tuna

Tuna has been a family favorite staple for decades. I grew up eating tuna fish sandwiches, an still have tuna fish 2-3 times each month for lunch. It’s affordable, versatile, and makes a quick and easy meal!

screen-shot-2016-10-25-at-8-51-27-pm

But what do you do when you need to feed a family? The standard 5 oz can is just not big enough. Luckily, Wild Planet Foods recently released family size Wild Albacore and Wild Skipjack Tuna. 100% pole and line caught, Wild Planet’s new family size Wild Albacore and Wild Skipjack Tuna are packed in larger 7.5oz cans— an additional 2.5 ounces of tuna as compared to traditional 5oz cans! In addition to its family size products, Wild Planet launched a few other new products:

Skinless & Boneless Wild Sardine Fillets. Organic Roasted Chicken Breast. The new Organic Roasted Chicken Breast is the first non-seafood item in Wild Planet’s line. While this is a new category for the company, the addition fits harmoniously with Wild Planet’s mission to provide consumers with food options that are healthful for the body and wildly good for our planet. Wild Planet’s Organic Roasted Chicken Breast features USDA Certified Organic Free-Range Chicken raised on an organic diet — featuring Non-GMO corn grown on land that is free of chemicals fertilizers, pesticides and herbicides.

img_0809

And like the tuna, the Organic Roasted Chicken Breast contains only two ingredients — chicken seasoned with sea salt. There is also a no salt added version available. Wild Planet Organic Roasted Chicken Breast provides 40% more chicken than other 5 oz. can offerings, due to the fact that only Wild Planet roasts their chicken without the addition of added water, liquids or fillers that are commonly found in other brands. Celebrating Non-GMO Month with Pereg Qunioa Pasta

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-6-45-52-pm

October is Non-GMO Month, the largest outreach campaign of the Non-GMO Project, according to Non-GMO News.

The Non-GMO Project label verifies that a product doesn’t contain genetically modified (GMO) ingredients.  Non-genetically modified means that plants or organisms are left as they are, as they were created in nature. In genetic modification, one or more of the genes has been altered using genetic engineering techniques, creating a new DNA. Some scientists, consumers and environmental groups cite health and environmental risks associated with foods that have been genetically modified (designated GMO).

Thus, a movement in the food industry for Non-GMO products was created, and more and more manufacturers, as well as consumers, are jumping onto the Non-GMO band wagon, especially in the natural food, organic and health food industries.

screen-shot-2016-10-24-at-6-45-01-pm

Pereg Natural Foods is a leading producer of Non-GMO food products which also happen to be all natural, kosher, vegan, non-dairy and gluten free. They include a range of foods: gluten-free flours in six varieties, gluten free pasta, premium spices and spice blends, ancient grains, and an extensive line of quinoa and couscous products. Pereg Natural Foods manufactures all its products from start to finish, controlling the quality from the sourcing until the product is packed and ready for the consumer.

Says Gill Schneider, President, Pereg Natural Foods, “From the get-go Pereg Natural Foods has been producing its food products using Non-GMO verified ingredients, while many other companies are just now switching form GMO. While genetic modification affects many of the products we consume on a daily basis, we at Pereg are proud to offer our customers premium food products made from all natural ingredients, that are healthful, nutritious and delicious, and Non-GMO verified.”

Family-owned since 1906, Pereg Natural Foods strives to provide its customers with the best products the world has to offer.  All of the brand’s offerings are 100% pure, fresh and natural and never include any additives, preservatives, fillers, MSG, or food coloring. In addition, every product is certified kosher by the OU and CRC.

I’ve cooked with Pereg spices before and was very excited to their all natural quinoa pasta. Made from 100% quinoa flour, the quinoa pasta has more carbs and protein per serving than most pastas. It has a firmer texture than traditional pasta and a distinct nutty quinoa-like taste that I really like.

Pereg Quinoa Pasta is available in three shapes: curvo rigate, fusilli and spaghetti.

Pereg products are available at select natural and health food stores, kosher supermarkets and online.

SuperEats NEW High Protein Sacha Inchi Tortilla Chips and Puffs

screen-shot-2016-10-20-at-8-48-04-pm
If you’re not familiar with SuperEats, let me tell you a little bit about them. SuperEats is a healthy snack company who brings an innovative, health conscious, and crave-able twist to traditional snacks.

SuperEats newest endeavor is a line of Sacha Inchi tortilla chips and puffs; think healthy, gluten free, protein-packed versions of Doritos and Cheetos made from a Peruvian super seed. These chips and puffs just launched and I was lucky enough to get a box sent to me to try!

img_0828

Ok, so what is Sacha Inchi? If you are like me, then you probably have not heard about this seed before. Sacha Inchi is a sustainably-grown seed native to the mountainous regions of the Peruvian Andes. Known was “the giving seed”, it looks and tastes like a peanut and gives you loads of needed nutrition from complete protein to vitamins and healthy fats.

In fact, each serving of Sacha Inchi tortilla chips and puffs contain 8-10 grams of protein! That’s the equivalent of eating 2 cups of spinach, 1/3 cup legumes or beans. I think I’ll take the chips.

nutrition_truffle_1oz_revised_large

Not only gluten free, Sacha Inchi tortilla chips and puffs are vegan, non-GMO and Kosher.
img_0829

Finally a healthy puff snack! But the real question is, how do they taste? Delicious! I love the crunchiness and healthiness of each bite. The flavors taste natural and there is no funny aftertaste you get sometimes when eating other flavored chips. The Truffle and Rosemary Puff was my favorite! It had just enough truffle taste to make it slightly rich and earthy, and paired with the lemon-pine flavor, it was the perfect combination.

You can purchase SuperEats products in over 4,000 store locations across the U.S. and online via Amazon. Look out for the new Sacha Inchi tortilla chips and puffs hitting store shelves this fall!

Crunchies Freeze Dried Fruit and Vegetables

Crunchies Natural Food Company is on a mission to deliver the best tasting, highest quality freeze dried fruit and vegetables on the planet. How do they do it Crunchies only works with farmers they know and trust. They pick the ripest fruit at the right time to make sure each bit is a mouthwatering burst of flavor. Fruits and vegetables are harvested, cleaned and then quickly frozen leaving them dry and crunchy, and allowing the fruits and vegetables to retain most of the color, flavor and nutritional value of fresh fruit.

img_0433

I’m not usually a freeze dried fruit kind of person. I find these products to be too crumbly, lack “real” fruit flavor and often times taste like chemicals. But crunchies keeps it simple. Crunchies contain no added sugar or artificial flavoring and they do not crumble and fall apart in my hands. The fruits are crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle. And the best part, they taste real!

Crunchies come in 10 delicious varieties

  • Blueberries
  • mango
  • strawberry banana
  • strawberries
  • raspberries
  • pineapple
  • grapes
  • cinnamon apple
  • beets
  • mixed fruit

My favorite are the mango and beets! What’s your favorite?

Crunchies are available for purchase online and in retail locations across the U.S., including Shaws, CVS, and Walmart.
